Spokane man arrested after fighting with deputy
February 13, 2012 9:49 a.m. - Updated: 2:12 p.m.
A Spokane man who reached for a knife in a fight with a sheriff’s deputy in Spokane Valley on Sunday night was arrested and charged with several felonies.
Brendon T. Kaluza-Graham, 24, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of first-degree attempted assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, obstructing a public servant and other charges, a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office news release said.
Deputy Darin Powers saw Kaluza-Graham “acting suspicious” around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Denny’s parking lot at Pines Road and Sprague Avenue.
Kaluza-Graham ducked between two parked vehicles then ran when Powers attempted to talk to him. Powers chased him across the intersection to the Rite Aid parking lot, where he left his patrol car and continued the pursuit on foot. Kaluza-Graham allegedly attempted to grab a folding knife in his waistband as Power caught up to him, the release said.
He continued to resist and fight with Powers until additional deputies, along with a “good samaritan,” arrived to help.
Powers’ knee was injured during the incident. Kaluza-Graham received some cuts and bruises and began vomiting after his arrest, the release said. Both received medical treatment and were released.
An investigation determined Kaluza-Graham had stolen the vehicle he was near when Powers initially tried to talk to him. Deputies found substances believed to be methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana on him, the release said. The vehicle was returned to its owner.

He fought the law, and the law won. Good job Deputy.
WOW!!!!!! The guy had a real knife and he didn”t get shot!!! Amazing!! Must of had a new deputy on the payroll.
yes dodd must have been one of the good ones. this guy was real lucky it wasnt olsen
good job everyone.if the accounts are accurate this dangerous moron should spend a long time in jail.
If he were dead the world would be that much of a better place. One less crazy druggie with a knife, right Dodd?
@Mr_Injustice:
If you do not have the courage to clearly identify yourself when you personally attack others what does that say about you?

Mr-injustice if you bothered to read the report on the Dodd murder you would know he was not under the influence of drugs at the time and had a key chain in his hand not a knife when the police put the 3rd bullet in him as he lay sprawled on the ground.
Get your facts straight before throwing your hate at a victims family member.
Ed,
Where as I do not fear the Police. I do think most of the people on this blog are crazy and being anon. has its benifits. Ask yourself why most of the people giving supporting comments to you won’t identify themselves. I was late joining this little hate game on the Spokesman. I’m just spewing opinion like the rest of the people here.
Which Dodd report are you referring to? An official one or one put out by a conspiracy theorist family member?
Nicely done SVPD. Hope the officer’s knee injury isn’t severe.
Question for S-R: Why a map detailing the location of Spokane Community College? The incident occurred at Sprague & Pines.
Actually, it was Powers who was suspicious. Kaluza-Graham was acting suspiciously.
reservedparking: I think the map is part of Spokane County Annual Crime report that the writers attached to this story.
injustice read the autopsy report the 3rd shot was a downward shot meaning he was already on the ground.
Nice work guys, and kudos to the civilian. Nice to see a helping hand.
key words “reached for a knife”. If he had been holding a knife the deputy would have had every right to protect himself.
Well Done Deputy Powers!!!! Great demonstration of professional restraint, decision process, and use of force. WELL DONE!!!!!!!
To answer a couple of questions:
Our mapping function behaves erratically sometimes. I fixed the location. Thanks for alerting me.
As for behaving “suspicious” versus suspiciously, I was quoting from the news release. I was not trying to give anyone a hard time about grammar, just to attribute the description of the activity to the official source.
Thanks.

The above is a good reason not to identify yourself on forums.
Deputy Darin Powers thank you for being there and making the night a little safe-for.
@Albert
Sounds good to me…the cop chased a suspect with a blade (probably didn’t know at the time he had one) the suspect went for it (at what point we don’t know) they battle it out on the ground, the cop gives the suspect some lumps and gets some himself. Back up arrives and he is hooked up. No one gets killed…no one gets shanked…all in a days work. I just wonder how the cops hands were, depending on when the suspect attempted to pull the blade, mine would probably be sorer than crap.
Sounds like a good job!
Kudos to the civilian help BTW, they really come in handy when you are getting your butt kicked.
@Ed
I’m in a fight with a guy with a blade, and fighting him on the ground or standing. I’m beating the living Sh*t out of that guy until I have control.
Over charged sure but that will be worked out.
Oh Lewis watching CSI reruns on TV doesn’t make either of us a forensic annalist.
As to how much help a citizen was is a matter of opinion. That of the paper to embellish the story for reader appeal, or that of the Sheriff’s Dept. to garner public support with a thanks to the community message. All in all I’m sure the Deputy appreciated the citizens role whatever it really was.
@Mr_Justice
As a point of clarification that was “most” correct?
@Mr_Justice
Sorry but this crazy kind of thought this was out of line. But you have every right to say it.

@Mr_Injustice: Understood, though I respectfully suggest contributing to a more civil tone in these forums, though I acknowledge it is hard to at times and I have stirred stuff up unnecessarily myself. Also, I did not reference any Dodd report so perhaps ask Lewis.
@Coffee: I don’t worry about people knowing who I am. Growing up in The Bronx in the 60s and 70s one learns a lot of ways to take care of themself. Enough said on that topic.
@Brian: I did not say anything about overcharging and admire the deputy for their professionalism, judgment and restraint. As you wrote, if it was overcharged that will hopefully sort itself at pretrial.

Good job deputy, way to use restraint and show profesionalism. Assisting citizen, kudos to you also.
Thank you for the positive comments. It is appreciated and truly nice to see.
@Deputy_Gregory, Thank you for the positive professional response. It is appreciated and truly encouraging to see. Please keep it up and we can bring some healing to our community.
Kudos to you Deputy_Gregory.
Job well done.
oops….
I guess that should have been Kudos to Deputy Darin Powers.
Oh well, Everyone can benefit from this one.
I was sitting in my car waiting for my wife to get out of the store the other night when I saw a guy wearing a backpack circle around the backside and come up towards the driver side window. I guess he wasn’t expecting me to be sitting in the car or something because he almost jumped out of his shoes when he saw me. He hightailed it away in the quickest fashion. I was literally waiting for him to try and open my door so he could see the business end of my nice little sig .357 …
There’s just so much trash on the streets of Spokane lately.
Grats for the fine officer and civilian that took another one off the street for awhile.
SVPD well done. Now go over to SPD and show em how it’s done!
Well deserved kudos!
