A car that was seen speeding on North Ruby Street on Wednesday later hit another vehicle on a residential street, landing both wrecked vehicles in the front yard of a nearby home, Spokane police said.
After an officer spotted it speeding north on Ruby, police said a Mitsubishi 3000 GT was driving at least 90 mph westbound on York Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. At the intersection with Washington Street, the Mitsubishi collided with a Nissan Pathfinder, and both cars came to rest on the front lawn of a house at the northwest corner of the intersection.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, who police believe may have sustained a broken leg, was taken to a hospital for treatment and placed under arrest on suspicion of vehicular assault.
The driver of the Nissan was taken to the hospital for possible injuries to his chest and neck.
Neither driver’s name was disclosed.
Initial police statements at the scene of the accident mentioned a third vehicle that may have been racing the Mitsubishi.
Police only had the description of the other racing car as a “dark-colored car,” according to Sgt. Steve Braun.
Washington was closed for several hours and evening commuters detoured to neighboring streets while police investigated the accident.
